Drifting Lost at Sea was written over

a period of 30 months.

Judging from the six clips provided, Drifting Lost at Sea appears to be a fairly long song. Well, it is … 13m 7s long, in fact. But I assure you, none of it will bore you. In a sense, it's six songs in one. Here's why this song turned out to be as long as it is …

As one might imagine, a whole lot had transpired during those 30 months of writing. Noel was just beginning his journey in '95, experiencing lows he'd never felt before. This song started out being a poem, which was addressed to God. Noel had been under the impression that he was chosen to do some miraculous thing; however, he had no idea what it might have been. The poem began as his official resignation from the appointment. But as with other things he has since written, he was to discover that his mind would be changed in the midst of quitting. This was the second of a number of repeated times this had happened to him.

In the midst of his quitting, he followed up by writing, "But if it is indeed me, whom you have chosen to do what I now view as such an impossible dream, at least guide me in the right direction, because I'm still foolish enough to believe that impossible is only a figment of other people's imaginations, not mine!"

By the time he finished writing the song in December of '97, he'd gone from living indoors to becoming a street person … all the while, musical inspiration was bellowing out of him through every pore.

The development of the song came in spurts. Typically, as life unfolded for him in precarious ways, both the mood of the melody and the storyline of the song would transform along with what he'd been experiencing in real time. There were lines of lyric that he wrote that made no absolute sense to him at the time of writing them down.
